In 2021 the Ontario Government announced it will partner with Shoppers Drug Mart to provide free menstrual products to high school students across the province. A tampon packaging and branding was created in anticipation of the future demand for menstrual products for high school students.
Bloom tampons differentiate from other brands in their appeal to the consumer as the tampons are presented in a fresh and cheerful fashion, rather than an overly saturated look which is the case with current national brands. Bloom tampons resemble individual flowers, stored within a flowerpot. Awarded the Applied Arts Magazine Packaging Design Award (2023) and Honourable Mention for Packaging Design by RGD (2023)

The Challenge
How can the packaging and branding of tampons improve in terms of of visual effectiveness and sustainability?
The Solution
A tampon brand that improves upon the package design of other brands in terms of usability, visual effects, sophisticated product presentation inspired by nature, and sustainability.
The containers that display the Bloom tampons and protect them while they are being stored is made of paper and, once empty, can be recycled or reused as a flowerpot to hold plants in the home.
Visual effectiveness is achieved with the use of three colours to indicate the absorbency of the tampons: lilac for light menstruation flow, darker purple for regular flow, and yellow for heavy flow.
Bloom is attentive to sustainability in terms of its use of natural plant fibre, unbleached 100% biodegradable wrappers for each individual tampon.
The brand aesthetic is highly memorable with it's flowerpot cylindrical shape and lid that opens to reveal the joy that flowers bring.
Accordion-folded infographic pamphlets are found at the top of each of the Bloom container. They are shaped like a flower and provide straightforward visuals and bilingual text (English on one side and French on the other) to help explain how to use the tampons as well as the health information and warnings.
