CIKL

The Centre for Indigenous Knowledges and Languages (CIKL) is an interdisciplinary research centre that supports both Indigenous and decolonizing scholarship. Bringing together Indigenous and non-Indigenous researchers, the centre facilitates knowledge that re-centres Indigenous knowledges, languages, practices and ways of being.

CIKL challenged me to create a new and distinct identity that simultaneously incorporates Indigenous knowledges and strengthens CIKL's brand.

The beautiful purple colour of the primary logo is inspired by the Haudenosaunee flag and the beads of wampum belts. Purple is one of the main colours in the Haudenosaunee flag, representing mutual respect, peace, and harmony among nations.

The turtle is formed by syllabics that act as a celebration of the many communities who presently use or formerly used syllabics. This writing system has been used by many groups including the Algonquin, Inuit, and Athabaskan language families.
The logo features an abstracted turtle which represents Turtle Island, a term used by Indigenous communities to refer to North America. The turtle symbolizes identity, culture, and earth connection. It acts as a reminder to take care of the land we inhabit and the communities we serve.
